Of course, we won't excel in the societal ladder if we just rely on the experiences we have undergone. Living life maybe survived by just learning things through experience, but the era now demands us to do more in order to get more. Moreover, we can also learn folds faster if we ingest the ideas, insights, discoveries, knowledge, skills, values learned by other people that are taught in formal schooling. It is what we are privilege to have in school, the ability to learn things by not anymore taking the hassles and bustles of experiencing it. =)
